The latest news on Giraffe "Hikari"
news
Updated on February 4, 2026
Hikari, a female Giraffe kept in West Garden of Ueno Zoo, was observed walking while protecting her right hind leg since January 19, 2026. As a result, she is being given painkillers to ease the pain in her right hind leg, and her exercise is being restricted to reduce strain on the leg, meaning she has not been allowed out into her large outdoor enclosure for several days.
As previously announced, an abnormality was found in Hikari's right hip joint shortly after she was born. We believe that the pain in her right hind leg is also a result of this abnormality. Caretakers and veterinarians will continue to work together to carefully monitor her condition. Hikari can be viewed indoors (*).
