Ueno Zoo welcomed a baby giraffe on February 2, 2020, the first Giraffe birth in 37 years (see announcement
here).
This was the first birth for the mother, "Ringo," and she was unable to accept her calf, so it is being raised by hand. Following the example of other farms, we gave her milk replacer for raising cows, and her weight, which was 41.3 kg on February 3rd, increased to 63.5 kg by March 3rd, and she is growing well.
An abnormality was found in the right hip joint of the pup shortly after birth, but it can now stand and walk and does not have any problems in its daily life. All of our staff are working hard to care for the pup and wish it healthy growth.
We look forward to the day when you can see the children, and we plan to gradually acclimate them to their new environment.
