ZooStock Project
The ZooStock Plan is a plan to protect and breed rare animals kept and exhibited at Tokyo Metropolitan Zoos and Aquariums (hereinafter referred to as "Tokyo Metropolitan Zoos, etc.").
In 1989, Tokyo Metropolitan Government formulated the Zoo Stock Plan, which lists the following species for each legally protected species both in Japan and overseas, and species that are in need of protection due to declining wild populations:
Breeding has been promoted by concentrating the animals in one metropolitan zoo or other facility.
Currently, in light of the changing circumstances surrounding metropolitan zoos and other facilities, we are promoting the "Second Zoo Stock Plan," which was formulated in 2018.

Species preservation
The number of target species (zoo stock species) will be expanded from 50 to 124, and efforts will be made to conserve species by promoting planned breeding and proper species management, while strengthening cooperation with relevant organizations working to conserve wildlife both domestically and internationally.
Contributing to wildlife conservation
For zoo stock species, the plan includes conservation outside their habitat (ex situ conservation) as well as conservation within their habitat (in situ conservation), and will continue to contribute to wildlife conservation by utilizing the technology and experience cultivated by metropolitan zoos and other facilities.
Environmental education and conservation awareness
Through the exhibition of zoo stock species, we will send out a message towards realizing a sustainable society that coexists with nature. We will also promote effective environmental education and awareness-raising for wildlife conservation so that metropolitan zoos and other facilities can become places that nurture future leaders in wildlife conservation.
