As previously reported in the news, Saffron, Pallas' Cat 's cat kept at Ueno Zoo (born April 13, 2024), has been hospitalized for an extended period due to a fracture and deformed fusion that occurred shortly after birth.
After repeated discussions between the veterinarian and animal keeper regarding the possibility of preserving the limb, the bone destruction of the phalanges was significant due to the spread of inflammation caused by the deformed fusion, so the left hind limb was amputated.
The surgery was performed on February 12, 2026. The postoperative recovery has been good, and Saffron was discharged on March 2 of the following month. Since then, she has been staying in a non-exhibition area. Considering that she had a long hospital stay from shortly after birth, she will be undergoing rehabilitation for some time to come. It will likely be some time before she can be shown to everyone, but please be patient while Saffron recovers her strength and muscle mass.
