What is molting, the process of birds changing their feathers?

Have you ever seen bird feathers lying around in your daily life?
Every year around July or August, you can often see feathers lying on the ground in Copper Pheasant enclosure and the Japanese bird enclosure at Inokashira Park Zoo.
It could be a feather that has fallen out due to the bird flapping its wings, but it could also be a sign that the bird is undergoing molting, a process of replacing its feathers.
多くの鳥は、繁殖や子育てを終えた夏ごろに、古くなった羽が新しい羽へと生えかわります。羽は私たちの髪の毛や爪と同じで、一度傷つくと修復することができません。羽には飛ぶことや体温を保つこと、雨や風から身を守ることなど、さまざまな役割がありますが、日々の生活のなかで少しずつ傷み、その機能を失ってしまいます。そのため、定期的に新しい羽へ生えかわる必要があるのです。
すべての羽が一度に抜けてしまうと飛べなくなるため、一部の鳥類を除いて、多くの鳥は少しずつ羽が生えかわります。換羽の途中では、新しい羽がまだ生え揃っていないので、羽の並びかたが乱れ、うまく飛ぶことも難しくなります。また、換羽には多くのエネルギーを必要とするため、この時期、鳥たちはじっとして、ひっそりとすごします。
7～8月の換羽の時期に展示場の掃除をしていると、毎日のようにさまざまな羽が落ちています。落ちている羽の形や大きさをみると、「風切羽」（翼にある飛ぶための羽）や「尾羽」（お尻のあたりにある長い羽）など、今どの部分の羽が生えかわっているのかを知ることができます。
また、鳥たちの羽が落ち始めると、「今年も繁殖期が終わり、換羽の季節が始まったな」と感じます。飼育係にとって換羽は、季節の変わり目を教えてくれる一つのサインでもあります。
If you come across any feathers lying around the exhibit, be sure to take a closer look at the birds. Observing them while imagining which parts of their feathers are being replaced, or whether they are quietly spending their molting period, might give you a different perspective on the birds than usual.
