Ueno Zoo is holding a supporter-only event called "Supporters Day" (This event is open only to supporters and their associates.
(Please note that we do not accept applications from the general public.)

Lecture "Thinking about the Happy Life of Animals: What Environmental Enrichment Can Do
The Tokyo National Museum's main auditorium was reserved for a lecture aimed at deepening understanding of "environmental enrichment," which is indispensable for animals to live happily. In addition to explaining the basic concept of environmental enrichment, the lecture introduced actual efforts being made at Ueno Zoo with specific examples, and explained the importance of animal husbandry exhibits that take animal welfare into consideration.

"East Garden Zoo"
We opened the park early in the morning to showcase scenes not usually seen by visitors, such as animals being taken out of their enclosures and their enclosures being cleaned. We also held keeper talk about the animals using the supporter funds and distributed a "Supporter Fund Utilization Map" to explain how the donated funds are being used.

"Lecture: The Role of Zoos"
The lecture was held in the large auditorium of the Tokyo National Museum.
The theme of the lecture was "The role of zoos," which goes beyond just raising and exhibiting animals. Staff members in charge of each topic gave lectures on "The efforts of the Tokyo Metropolitan Zoo to protect wild animals from extinction" and "The arrival and departure of zoo animals."

"East Garden Zoo"
The zoo opened early in the morning, allowing visitors to see scenes of the zoo that are not normally visible, such as the animals being released into their enclosures and the enclosures being cleaned.
We also held keeper talk who used the funds, and distributed a supporter fund utilization map to introduce how the supporter funds we received can be used.
During the event, we also had a tour of Saruyama, which has been scheduled for reconstruction as a new facility.

"West Garden Morning Zoo"
Before the Ueno Zoo opened in West Garden, visitors were able to see the animals in their usual morning behavior and see the animal care work being done.
During the event, several explanatory spots were set up and keeper talk were given by the animal care staff in charge.

"Lecture: Zoo Backstage"
We borrowed the Tokyo National Museum's large auditorium to hold a lecture on the theme of "the zoo's backstage," which is not normally open to the public.
This time, staff members in charge of "animal food" and "animal health management" gave lectures on their work.

"Introduction to the use of supporter funds (online)"
As an online program exclusively for supporters, director delivered a live greeting and updated the zoo's current situation, and a video introducing how animal keeper will be using the supporter funds was released exclusively to the public.
In addition, for those who were unable to watch it on the day, an archived video was made available for approximately one month.

We toured East Garden in a morning zoo format.
The visitors were able to see scenes of the zoo that are not normally visible before opening, such as the animals being let out and the exhibit areas being cleaned.
Additionally, explanation spots were set up in several locations within the zoo, where animal keeper introduced the animals and how supporter funds are being used.

On the third floor of West Garden Management Office, a report on the income and expenditures for fiscal year 2018 and an update on the school's current situation were given by director.
We also received a report on the penguin enclosure, which has been improved using supporter funds, and toured the animal enclosure.

We also reported on Meerkat breeding and exhibition facility, which has been improved using supporter funds, and on the growth process and latest status of Giant Panda Xiang Xiang.

"Animal feeding situation"
A lecture was given by the feed room staff member about the procurement and storage of the food that the animals normally eat.
Afterwards, the children split into two groups, one East Garden and the other for West Garden, where they watched the zookeepers introduce the animals to food and observe the actual feeding process.

"Children's Zoo STEP Experience"
At Children's Zoo STEP, which reopened in July 2017, visitors were able to participate in events that normally have numbered tickets and age restrictions, and zookeepers provided guided tours.
