Ueno Zoo ended its chicken exhibit in March 2025, but reopened it on December 8, 2025 (Monday) with the arrival of chickens (Hinai chickens and bantams) from Toyama City Family Park. The newly arrived chickens can be seen at Children's Zoo STEP "Birds' Home 2".

Chickens are domesticated birds that originated from the red junglefowl, a type of Red Junglefowl. They have long been raised for eggs and meat, making them familiar and important animals to us humans. In Japan, through selective breeding, there are breeds that are enjoyed not only for food but also for their beauty and pleasant voices. Here are some of the chicken breeds that have come to visit us.

Hinaidori (Hinaidori)

Hinai chickens are native to the Hinai region of Akita Prefecture (present-day Odate City) and are a Japanese chicken with beautiful feather color and body shape. They have been called Hinai chickens since around 1897. Hinai chicken meat has long been known for its delicious taste, and is an essential ingredient in Akita's food culture, including the famous "Kiritanpo Nabe" hotpot.

Dwarf chicken (bantam)

Dwarf chickens are native to a region called Champa in Vietnam and are said to have arrived in Japan via China in the early Meiji period. The name "Dwarf Chicken" is thought to be a corrupted version of Champa, the place of origin. Characterized by a unique shape with a small body and short legs, they are also very popular as ornamental animals.

Even among chickens, the color, size, and shape of their feathers can vary due to past selective breeding. Please take a close look at these two breeds!
