"Let's make an animal feeder - Test! Can we elicit wild-like behavior?"
Wild animals naturally spend a lot of their time searching for food and patrolling their territory. However, in zoos, they are provided with nutritious food and a safe environment, which means they have less stimulation than life in the wild, and they can sometimes become bored. For this reason, zoos try to elicit behavior that is as similar as possible to that of the wild, even in captivity, by devising feeding methods and living space designs.
In this class, students will work in groups to create feeders that will bring out the natural behavior of wild animals. They will then use the feeders to actually feed animals and observe their behavior to verify their effectiveness.
