August 15th and 16th: Reading aloud the picture book "The Poor Elephant"

We will be reading aloud the picture book "The Poor Elephant" by Yukio Tsuchiya.
The picture book "The Poor Elephants" tells the sad story of how many animals, including elephants, lost their lives at Ueno Zoo during World War II.
This story is based on the actual "disposal of dangerous animals during wartime" that took place at Ueno Zoo in the summer of 1943. The Tokyo Zoo Volunteers (TZV) will be reading this picture book aloud.
We hope that reflecting on events at zoos during wartime will serve as an opportunity to consider a future where humans and animals can coexist happily together.
