The panda enclosure in East Garden of Ueno Zoo (hereinafter referred to as the "East Garden Panda Enclosure") has not housed Giant Panda since the end of the "Panda Forest Forest" exhibit in West Garden in February 2023, following the completion of the exhibit for "Xiang Xiang." Due to the aging of the facility, East Garden Panda Enclosure will be demolished.

In conjunction with this, we will be holding a panel exhibition looking back on the approximately 50-year history of East Garden panda enclosure, starting from the first panda enclosure.
The current East Garden panda enclosure was completed in 1988, utilizing the experience gained from the first panda enclosure, which was completed in 1973. Part of the outdoor enclosure was carried over directly from the first panda enclosure.
Including the original panda enclosure, this facility has been home to a total of 13 Giant Panda Giant Panda arrive in Japan, to "Xiang Xiang," who was returned to China in 2023.
During the event, the viewing area of East Garden panda enclosure, which is normally closed to the public, will be opened for free viewing. We hope you will take this opportunity to learn about the history of panda breeding at Ueno Zoo.
* Ueno Zoo does not currently keep Giant Panda.
