Every year, March 3rd is World Wildlife Day. This day was established by the United Nations in commemoration of the adoption of the Washington Convention, which regulates the international trade of endangered wild animals and plants, on March 3, 1973. In honor of this, Ueno Zoological Gardens will be hosting an event inviting external conservation organizations to provide visitors with an opportunity to directly participate in conservation activities.

Buy, learn, and protect!

Organizations engaged in wildlife conservation activities will be holding a market selling goods related to natural environment preservation and offering workshops. Panels introducing the activities of each organization will also be on display. This is a chance to contribute to protecting wildlife by "buying" and "learning"! Please bring your own eco-bag when shopping.

Gifu University, Center for Zoo Biology Research, Animal Conservation and Reproduction Laboratory

In collaboration with zoos and other institutions, we are conducting research on the reproductive physiology and ecology of various endangered species, including elephants, Giraffe, tigers, Tsushima Leopard Cat cats, Rock Ptarmigan, Shoebill, as well as determining estrus, ovulation, and pregnancy through the analysis of sex hormones in feces.

Certified NPO Tiger and Elephant Conservation Fund

This NPO works to protect the rich habitats of wild tigers, elephants, and Iriomote cats, who are the main pillars of the forest ecosystem, by focusing on their local habitats.

Okinawa and Amami World Natural Heritage Supporters Team

NPO Animal Hospital Okinawa

We are engaged in rescue activities for Okinawan rails and Iriomote cats, roadkill prevention, habitat restoration, population surveys, and initiatives to promote responsible cat ownership that impacts wildlife. In particular, we are working with zoos in Japan to breed Okinawa rails in captivity.

Taihei Electric Co., Ltd.

As part of our business, the "ECO Favor Project" sells original towels embroidered with images of wild animals, donating a portion of the proceeds to nature conservation organizations in those habitats. We are also developing roadkill prevention devices and bird strike prevention films.

WWF Japan (World Wide Fund for Nature Japan)

WWF is the world's largest nature conservation organization, operating in over 100 countries. They will be setting up a special pop-up shop, "PANDA SHOP," offering sustainable goods and a bazaar of discounted items.

Kanto Ecological Network Promotion Council

We are working to revitalize the region while protecting and creating a rich natural environment, with the stork as our symbol.

Mitsubishi UFJ Bank Ueno Branch

Mitsubishi UFJ Bank's Ueno Branch, through its employee-participatory social contribution program "MUFG SOUL," makes donations to the "Tokyo Zoological Park Society Wildlife Conservation Fund" as a financial institution rooted in the local community. In addition to supporting activities that contribute to environmental conservation and biodiversity conservation, the branch also undertakes various initiatives for financial and economic education for children.

Tokyo Zoological Park Society a public interest incorporated foundation

This section introduces the wildlife conservation activities and global environmental conservation efforts undertaken by four Tokyo Metropolitan zoos and aquariums.

Some organizations do not sell merchandise, instead offering only panel displays and workshops.
Each store will close once all items are sold out.

Talk event between exhibiting organizations and zoo staff

Ueno Zoo is committed to the conservation of various wildlife species. In this event, exhibitors and zoo staff will discuss the conservation efforts at the zoo, which are not usually open to the public. While the content is geared towards upper elementary school students and older, everyone is welcome to attend.

The story of Shoebill breeding

In this discussion, Satoshi Kusuda of Gifu University and a staff member Ueno Zoo will talk about the collaborative efforts being made by Ueno Zoo and Gifu University to breed Shoebill, a species considered difficult to breed worldwide.

A story about bird conservation on remote islands

Takashi Nagamine of the NPO Animal Hospital Okinawa and a staff member from Ueno Ueno Zoo will discuss the conservation of the Amami Lidth's Jay, which inhabits Amami Oshima, and the Okinawa Rail, which inhabits Okinawa, as well as the threats posed by invasive species and efforts to address them.
