Ueno Zoo has many attractions, and along with the animals, the scenery and buildings within the zoo are also part of its charm. The former Five-storied Pagoda of Kan'ei-ji Temple, located within the zoo grounds, has been cherished by many as an important cultural property that allows visitors to feel the history of Ueno.
Until now, the walking route around Five-storied Pagoda was only accessible to park visitors, but as a temporary measure to allow more people to enjoy it up close, it will be opened to the public from outside the park starting March 17th.
You can still view Five-storied Pagoda from inside the park, but the sightseeing route will only be accessible from outside the park (on the side of the approach to Ueno Toshogu Shrine).
The sightseeing route is scheduled to be available from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM on days when Ueno Zoo is open, but this may be adjusted depending on the situation.
This will be a temporary opening, but we plan to proceed with construction work towards this autumn to make it more easily accessible for tourists and those strolling around.
