What is the Red List?

The higher the category in each table, the higher the risk of extinction, and CR, EN, and VU are the three categories known as "endangered species." In Tokyo, species that are not at the NT (near threatened) level but are relatively rare are considered "species of concern."

They are classified as an independent group called the Rock Raccoonidae, but are considered to be closely related to elephants. One reason for this is that they have rounded claws on their toes similar to those of elephants. They live in herds in crevices such as rocky areas and cliffs, and mainly eat grass plants.
