Animals of Japan's village forest
Animals of Japan's village forest
Let's take a closer look at familiar animals that often appear in folktales and fairy tales, such as foxes and Raccoon Dog. Red Fox, which uses its large ears and keen sense of smell to find prey; the Japanese Badger, which digs tunnels with its sharp claws; and the marten and Masked Palm Civet, which nimbly climb trees. Japanese Giant Flying Squirrel are nocturnal and become active about 30 minutes after sunset, so try peeking into their burrows.
