We will begin raising Ogasawara Greenfinches.

The Ogasawara Greenfinch is found only in the Ogasawara Islands and is designated as a nationally endangered wild animal and plant species under the Act on Conservation of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. We are pleased to announce that Inokashira Park Zoo has taken in one bird that was bred at Ueno Zoo as part of its ex-situ conservation efforts for this species and will begin raising it.

To contribute to the conservation of the Ogasawara Greenfinch, Ueno Zoo received two birds from a facility on Chichijima Island in March 2025 and successfully bred them in captivity in June of the same year. Furthermore, in 2026, they also succeeded in breeding a pair born in captivity. In order to further advance this conservation and breeding program, they have decided to accept individuals bred at Ueno Zoo.
