In Japan, there is a law called the Museum Act, which defines a "museum" as "an institution whose purpose is to collect, preserve (including cultivation), and exhibit materials relating to history, art, folklore, industry, natural science, etc., to make them available to the general public with educational considerations, to carry out necessary activities that contribute to their education, research, recreation, etc., and to also conduct research on these materials."
Zoos and aquariums are also types of museums that collect, raise, exhibit, research, and use living creatures for educational and recreational activities.
The four Tokyo Metropolitan Zoos and Aquariums (Ueno Zoo, Tama Zoo, Tokyo Sea Life Park, and Inokashira Park Zoo) have previously operated as "museum-equivalent facilities." Following the 2022 amendment to the Museum Act, they reapplied and, after review, became "registered museums" on March 31, 2026.
The four zoos have engaged in a variety of activities, including not only raising and exhibiting animals, but also environmental education programs and research. As registered museums, we intend to further enhance our activities and play a role in connecting to the future.
