This duck lives in ponds, lakes, and on the coast. Males have red eyes, while females have dark brown eyes. It is a migratory bird that is mainly born in central and eastern Europe, and migrates to warmer regions, including Japan, in the winter. It can be seen in Tokyo's oceans, rivers, and park ponds. It dives underwater and feeds on creatures such as the stems of aquatic plants growing on the bottom and shellfish found in the mud.
