Zoo Stock Species and the Red List
Zoo Stock Species and the Red List
Zoo Stock
This indicates that the species is included in the Second Zoo Stock Plan, which was formulated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in 2018. The plan sets goals for the next 10 years in three areas: "species conservation," "contribution to wildlife conservation," and "environmental education and conservation awareness." 124 animal species are included.
What is the Red List?
Based on scientific research, this is a list of wildlife classified by rank (category) indicating the degree of risk of extinction.
Livng Things Encyclopedia shows the categories (mainland and islands) assessed by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) at the global level, the Ministry of the Environment for Japan, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government for Tokyo.
The higher the category in each table, the higher the risk of extinction, and CR, EN, and VU are the three categories known as "endangered species." In Tokyo, species that are not at the NT (near threatened) level but are relatively rare are considered "species of concern."

Wrought Iron Butterflyfish
Chaetodon daedalmaThis is a type of butterflyfish with calm black and white coloring. It is said to have been named after its pattern, which resembles Yuzen dyeing. They are usually found in pairs, but in the Ogasawara Islands, large schools known as "Wrought Iron Butterflyfish balls" can be seen in early summer.

Investigating the ecology of Wrought Iron Butterflyfish
Wrought Iron Butterflyfish is a popular ornamental fish, but is listed as a species of concern on the Tokyo Red List due to concerns about extinction due to overfishing. At the aquarium, we identify individual Wrought Iron Butterflyfish in their habitat, the Ogasawara Islands, and observe their behavior by diving. In 2019, we were the first in the world to successfully observe breeding behavior. We are conducting research to shed light on Wrought Iron Butterflyfish 's ecology, which is still poorly understood, and to contribute to conservation.
Poke the rock
When observing Wrought Iron Butterflyfish, you may see it pecking at rocks with its tiny mouth. Wrought Iron Butterflyfish butterflyfish has a mouth densely packed with tiny teeth that resemble the bristles of a toothbrush, and it uses these teeth to scrape off algae and other organisms attached to rocks and eat them.
