[Completed] Course for high school and university students: "The Ocean's Learning Center" - "Learn about shellfish, learn about the world" (Registration closed)
event
February 26, 2026
"The Sea Learning Center" is a series of courses for high school and university students in which leading researchers and naturalists introduce the fascinating aspects of the marine and river environments, the creatures that live there, and the joy of research.
This time, we are pleased to welcome Professor Hiroshi Fukuda from Okayama University as our lecturer. Professor Fukuda is a taxonomist specializing in mollusks, and in addition to his taxonomic research, including the description of numerous new species, he has also been involved in the compilation of the Ministry of the Environment's Red Data Book and Red List, as well as the promotion of biodiversity conservation.
The first half of the program will consist of a lecture by Mr. Fukuda on his research and career, while the second half will be a hands-on workshop on preparing mollusks for participants.
High school and university students, please join us!

Content
① 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM Lecture: "Understanding Shellfish, Understanding the World"
I will discuss the classification and conservation of mollusks. Mollusks are a general term for animals belonging to the phylum Mollusk, and include snails, slugs, sea slugs, squid, and octopuses. One striking characteristic of mollusks is the extremely high number of endangered species. Many species have low mobility, so when the environment deteriorates, their population declines faster than other organisms. For this reason, mollusks are ideal as environmental indicator organisms, but currently, we lack sufficient information even on where different mollusk species live, so accumulating specimens is crucial. The technique of removing the flesh is important in specimen preparation, and I will introduce it with a hands-on exercise.
② 15:20-16:00 Practical training in preparing shellfish specimens
We will create shellfish specimens by removing the meat from the shells. Under the guidance of Mr. Fukuda, a professional in shellfish removal, you will experience the fundamentals of specimen preparation in biology. Please note that this workshop is only for participants of the hands-on session.
