Lion "Mugi" has died.

On July 28, 2026, Mugi, a female Lion (born September 12, 2022, 3 years old) that was being kept in a non-exhibition area of Tama Zoo passed away.

At Tama Zoo 's Lion Enclosure (Lion enclosure and expulsion area), measures have been taken every year to cope with the summer heat, such as ensuring shade within the expulsion area, providing ventilation to the sleeping areas, and ensuring ventilation at night.

However, due to the sudden heatwave since mid-July 2026, several Lion showed signs of ill health. As a result, Lion exhibit was suspended from July 23rd, and treatment and other care were carried out within Lion enclosure.

Mugi began showing signs of loss of appetite on July 19th, and the following day, the 20th, she was unable to stand. Suspecting that the heatwave was causing her to become unwell, we continued to provide ventilation and water to help her cool down. On the 24th, she began to eat small amounts of food that was brought to her mouth, but there was no significant improvement in her condition.

From the 26th, we administered subcutaneous fluids, liver tonics, and vitamins through a fence and carefully monitored its condition, but unfortunately, we confirmed its death around 11:00 a.m. on the 28th.

We will promptly conduct a pathological autopsy and other examinations to determine the cause of death.

Regarding the other Lion, some of the 15 lions currently being kept (excluding "Mugi," who died this time) are showing signs of recovery. However, we will continue to prioritize the health management of Lion and will keep their exhibits suspended.
