background

Charlie was born in November 2014 at Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens in Nagoya. After being moved to Kanazawa Zoo in Yokohama City in accordance with the species management plan of the Japanese Association Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums, he arrived at Tama Zoo on November 20, 2023.

A health check conducted in February 2026 revealed that the bird was suspected of having lymphoma (*1) and was also infected with cryptococcus (*2). From Saturday, February 21st, the bird was moved to a non-public area for health management and treatment, and medication was started, but its movements gradually became sluggish. Subsequently, the amount of eucalyptus it consumed decreased, so efforts were made to help it recover its strength by providing a variety of eucalyptus types that it relatively liked, but it was confirmed dead on the morning of Sunday, March 15th.
