Zoo Stock Species and the Red List

Zoo Stock

dummy

This indicates that the species is included in the Second Zoo Stock Plan, which was formulated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in 2018. The plan sets goals for the next 10 years in three areas: "species conservation," "contribution to wildlife conservation," and "environmental education and conservation awareness." 124 animal species are included.

What is the Red List?

Based on scientific research, this is a list of wildlife classified by rank (category) indicating the degree of risk of extinction.
Livng Things Encyclopedia shows the categories (mainland and islands) assessed by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) at the global level, the Ministry of the Environment for Japan, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government for Tokyo.

The higher the category in each table, the higher the risk of extinction, and CR, EN, and VU are the three categories known as "endangered species." In Tokyo, species that are not at the NT (near threatened) level but are relatively rare are considered "species of concern."

Body color and pattern

Lion have a yellowish-brown body color, which helps them blend in easily with the grasslands and serves as a protective color. Cubs have black spots that fade as they grow.

Lion 's Tail

Lion are the only cats with a black tuft of hair at the end of their tails, which they shake when moving or hunting, and which are said to signal to their pack members.

Hoko(Roar)

Lion 'Hoko(Roar) can reach up to 8km away and are used to mark their territory and to communicate with other members of the pride. This Hoko(Roar) also plays an important role in maintaining unity within the pride. Furthermore, both males and females roar in unison, strongly advocating the presence of the pride to those around them.

Danger in the wild

Lion are classified as vulnerable by the IUCN, with an estimated 23,000 adult and sub-adult lions remaining in the wild in Africa and 670 in India. Their populations have declined by around 30% over the past 20 years. The main threats are habitat loss and fragmentation, declining prey, conflict with humans, and the illegal trade in their bones and body parts.

Lion Bus at Tama Zoo

Lion Bus at Tama Zoo

It began operating in May 1964 as the world's first "safari-style" exhibit, where visitors could board a bus to view Lion enclosure. In July 2021, the Lion Bus Station was renovated and reopened, and now features an explanatory exhibition area where you can learn about Lion, as well as a viewing area with a panoramic view of the enclosure through glass. Not only can you observe Lion up close from the bus, but it also serves as an information hub.
