Recent news on Giant Panda [98], Recent news on Shin Shin and her cubs [62]
└─ 2023/03/15
We would like to inform you of the following regarding Giant Panda "Shin Shin" and her two cubs "Xiaoxiao," "Leilei," and "Ri Ri," who were born on June 23, 2021.

Lili's current situation

Li Li's health is good.

Their diet mainly consists of bamboo such as Moso bamboo, Shino bamboo, and Madake bamboo, along with panda dumplings, carrots, and apples, which are given as needed.

We change the enclosure location according to the animals' condition and the weather, but since it's a pleasant season for pandas, we're letting them out outdoors more often. Their exhibit location had been changed due to renovation work at "Panda Forest," but they returned to their original room on February 27th. There have been no particular changes in Ri Ri's behavior since then.

As of March 5, 2023, Leelee's weight was measured at 133.5 kg.

Shinshin's current situation

Shinshin is in good health.

We primarily feed her bamboo such as Moso bamboo, Shino bamboo, and Madake bamboo, and she also readily eats panda dumplings, carrots, and apples as supplements. The amount of food we give her is adjusted as needed based on her eating habits, weight changes, and nursing of her cub.

Due to renovations at the "Panda Forest" enclosure, Shin Shin's exhibit location had been changed, but she returned to her original room on February 27th. No particular changes have been observed in Shin Shin's behavior since then.

As of March 5, 2023, Shinshin's weight was measured at 122.6 kg.

Updates on Xiaoxiao and Leilei

Both puppies are in good health. Although there may be some difference in their weight, both are gaining weight steadily.

They are now frequently seen gnawing on bamboo, and otherwise, they are seen playing with Shinshin and the two of them playing together, just as before.

The pandas had been moved to a different location due to renovations at "Panda Forest," but they returned to their original enclosure on February 27th. No particular changes have been observed in their behavior since then.

Since March 10th, we have been preparing for Xiaoxiao and Leilei to become independent, setting aside time for them to spend on their own, and since March 13th, Xinxing has been separated from them at night, when breastfeeding opportunities are most frequent.

When they live together, Xiao Xiao often follows Xin Xin around, but Xin Xin doesn't actively engage with her, prioritizing her own foraging, not readily accepting breastfeeding, and often cutting it short. It seems that she is no longer prioritizing childcare as she used to.

During the separation, Shinshin has been behaving as usual. As for Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei, they have been spending more time together and Xiao Xiao has occasionally shown signs of looking for Shinshin, so there are some differences from their usual behavior, but they are getting enough food and rest. Since both mother and cubs are prioritizing their own actions, we believe that the separation process is progressing smoothly.

We continue to feed the two cubs not only breast milk but also formula. We also give them panda dumplings, apples, and carrots as supplementary foods, and they eat them well.

We've placed a mark on Xiao Xiao's back to allow us to review video footage of her nighttime activities and to clearly identify her in surveillance camera footage. Neither mother nor offspring seem to mind the mark.
