backgroundUeno Zoo is working with other zoos to promote the breeding of the rare Sumatran Tiger. On December 3, 2018, they received a male named "Bran" from Misaki Park in Misaki-cho, Sennan-gun, Osaka Prefecture (which closed in March 2020), and on November 24, 2020, they received a female named "Mimpi" from Yokohama Municipal Nogeyama Zoo, both through a breeding loan (*).
The two tigers were placed together in January of this year for breeding purposes, and mating was observed. The cub was born on April 28th. This is the first birth of Sumatran Tiger cub at Ueno Zoo in 26 years, since 1997.
※About breeding loans
This is an animal loan agreement for the purpose of breeding. By transferring animals between zoos, the purpose is to form new pairs and contribute to breeding.
Current situationThe mother, "Mimpi," is a first-time mother, and initially, she was seen in a nursing position with her baby latching onto her nipple. However, she gradually stopped nursing, so now animal keeper are assisting with nursing in an effort to maintain the mother-child relationship.
