Ueno Zoo is working with other zoos to implement joint breeding programs based on the Sumatran Tiger management plan of the Biodiversity Committee of Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

We would like to inform you that it has been determined that there is a high possibility that "Minpi" is pregnant.

On November 24, 2020, the animal was received by Ueno Zoo on a breeding loan (*) from Yokohama Municipal Nogeyama Zoo.
April 28, 2023: Gave birth to two cubs (Asa (female, first calf), the other was stillborn).

*Regarding breeding loans
This refers to an animal loan agreement for the purpose of breeding. The goal is to create new pairs and contribute to breeding by moving individuals between zoos.

In late August 2023, Mimpi and Blanc (male, 10 years old) were placed together for breeding purposes, and multiple matings were observed. Subsequently, blood hormone (progesterone) levels, which are regularly measured, began to rise from early September, and remained high into November, even though the levels should have decreased if pregnancy had not occurred. Furthermore, from around mid-November, the nipples became easily visible, and changes in body shape, such as a noticeable swelling of the abdomen, were observed, leading to the conclusion that there was a very high possibility of pregnancy. However, considering the potential impact on the animals, ultrasound and X-ray examinations were not performed.

The gestation period for Sumatran Tiger is said to be around 103 days. Based on the mating confirmed in late August 2023, the birth is expected to occur around early December 2023.

To ensure a safe environment for Mimpi to raise her cubs, we may suspend all Sumatran Tiger exhibits for several days before and after the birth. We appreciate your understanding.
