└─2023/12/06 (12/14 updated)
Updated December 11, 2023:
It's been a week since Mimpi gave birth, so here's an update on how she's doing now.

All three puppies, born on December 4, 2023, are healthy. They sometimes cry, but spend most of their time sleeping.

Mother Mimpi is breastfeeding her babies well, and she can also be seen relaxing a short distance away when the babies are sleeping.

background

Our zoo is working in cooperation with other zoos to promote the breeding of Sumatran Tiger. On December 3, 2018, we received a male named "Bran" from Misaki Park in Misaki-cho, Sennan-gun, Osaka Prefecture (which closed in March 2020), and on November 24, 2020, we received a female named "Mimpi" from Yokohama Municipal Nogeyama Zoo, through a breeding loan (*).

When we placed them together for breeding purposes in late August of this year, we observed multiple matings. We confirmed that the first cub was born just before 8:00 AM on December 4th, the second around 8:30 AM, and the third around 9:00 AM.

Incidentally, Mimpi also gave birth to two puppies in April of this year (one of which was stillborn).

※About breeding loans
This is an animal loan agreement for the purpose of breeding. By transferring animals between zoos, the purpose is to form new pairs and contribute to breeding.

Current situation

Nursing behavior was observed at approximately 10:50 AM on Monday, December 4th. Both mother and calves are currently doing well.

About the release

The opening date will be announced on Ueno Zoo official website as soon as it is decided.

The tiger exhibit was temporarily closed due to Mimpi giving birth, but the exhibit of all tigers except Mimpi and her newborn cubs reopened on Tuesday, December 12, 2023.
Currently, the exhibition of all Sumatran Tiger is suspended, but from December 8th (Friday) onwards, tigers other than Mimpi and her newborn cubs may be temporarily released into the outdoor enclosure.
