On April 2, 2014, both antlers of "Q" (born June 2010), a male Ezo Sika Deer at Ueno Zoo 's East Garden, fell off simultaneously. Last year, the antlers fell off one day apart, but this year, when the zookeepers checked on Q in his enclosure first thing in the morning, both antlers had already fallen off, and there was blood on the floor.

Up until the day before his antlers fell off, Q had been acting tough towards Nagi (male, born June 2009), a serow that he shared the enclosure with. However, after his antlers fell off, his personality completely changed, and he became timid and lacked confidence. Seeing this change in behavior, Nagi became more assertive, and began to threaten Q by swinging his antlers and chasing him.

Therefore, Q is currently allowed to move freely between his bedroom, where he feels safe, and the exhibition area. It may be a little difficult to see him at times, but please understand that this is only for a short period until Q's new horns grow and he regains his confidence.

This timid, hornless Q is only temporary. Be sure to observe him closely.
