Background, etc.
Polar Bear are facing extinction due to habitat deterioration caused by global warming. To conserve this species, zoos across Japan are working together to promote breeding. As part of these efforts, new individuals are being introduced, and breeding-capable individuals are being moved between zoos to facilitate pair formation.
At Ueno Zoo, a new facility, "Polar Ber and Seal Oceans" opened in October 2011, and in 2012, a female polar bear named Dea was transferred from Fasano Safari Park in Italy. However, at the time, Dea had not yet reached breeding age, so she could not be paired with Yukio, a male polar bear already at the zoo. Subsequently, Yukio died in November 2014, and Dea remained in captivity alone.
In order to pair Dea, who has reached breeding age, we have borrowed Ikoru (male), who is currently being kept at Obihiro Zoo, through a breeding loan (*) from Sapporo Maruyama Zoo, and we plan to work on breeding Polar Bear.
※About breeding loans
This refers to an animal loan agreement for the purpose of breeding. The aim is to encourage the formation of new pairs and contribute to breeding by moving individuals between zoos.
