Giant Panda cub, born on June 12, 2017, is now 10 days old as of yesterday, June 22, counting its birth day as "day zero". Both mother and cub are in stable condition, and a third physical examination was conducted yesterday. The results confirmed that the cub is in good health and is female.
The physical examination took place from 11:43 a.m. to 11:56 a.m. The calf was placed in an incubator, and a physical examination was conducted, including checking its physical condition. Its weight was 283.9 grams (an increase of 105 grams from 178.9 grams measured five days ago [June 17th]), and its length was 17.6 centimeters (an increase of 1.2 centimeters from 16.4 centimeters on June 17th).
As you can see in the video above, the area around its eyes and ears has become darker, and the black band around its shoulders has deepened all the way to the tips of its front paws. Its hind legs have also started to turn black.
During the examination, we visually inspected the external genitalia with experts invited from the China Giant Panda Conservation and Research Center, and then sent images to the center for their opinion on the sex. Ultimately, we determined that the cub was female.
Mother Shinshin is also doing well. She used to eat bamboo shoots, but now mainly eats bamboo stems and leaves. Currently, we are giving her water and solid food every six hours.
Both mother and child are healthy and in stable condition, but we will continue to carefully monitor and provide childcare services 24 hours a day with our staff.
*The "bamboo shoots" mentioned in the text are not the kind of bamboo shoots that humans eat, but rather bamboo species that have not yet produced leaves and are in an immature growth stage.
