On August 1, 2017, when Shin Shin, Giant Panda cub at Ueno Zoo, turned 50 days old, she underwent her seventh physical examination (counting her birthday, June 12, as day zero and June 13 as day one).
It was on the afternoon of July 24th, when the pup was 42 days old, that we confirmed that both of its eyes were fully open. On August 1st, when it was 50 days old, a physical examination and measurements were taken from 11:34 a.m. to 11:57 a.m.
While Shin Shin was away from her calf eating, a staff member reached through a gap in the cage of the birthing room to gently pick up the calf and measured its weight and length. The calf was in good health, its weight had increased from 1,656.5 grams on July 22 to 2,341.2 grams, and its length had grown from 34.1 centimeters to 40.6 centimeters.
Mother Shin Shin is spending time with her cub in the birthing room. She is taking good care of the cub by licking its body, nursing it, and encouraging it to defecate. The rest of the time, Shin Shin is resting and eating. Currently, the cub is eating bamboo shoots, bamboo grass, apples, carrots, and "panda dumplings," and its feeding situation is good.
We will continue to monitor the mother and child 24 hours a day. Physical examinations will also continue, but the timing is yet to be determined.
