On August 31, 2017, from 10:37 to 10:55 AM, the 80-day-old Giant Panda cub "Shin Shin" at Ueno Zoo underwent its 10th physical examination. Its weight increased by approximately 737 grams since August 21 to 4,493 grams. Its length also increased by 7.5 centimeters compared to August 21, reaching 55.5 centimeters. It is growing well.
It is said that Giant Panda teeth become visible around two months of age, and now the crowns of their upper canine teeth are becoming quite prominent.
Its limbs are becoming stronger and stronger, and it can be seen propelling itself forward by bracing itself with its front legs, but it is not yet able to stand firmly on all fours. Also, its eyesight does not seem to be very good yet, but it sometimes shows head movements that suggest it is recognizing things in front of it.
Mother Shin Shin is spending time with her cub in the birthing room. She is taking good care of the cub as usual, licking its body, nursing it, and encouraging it to defecate. The rest of the time, Shin Shin is resting and eating. Currently, the cub is eating bamboo shoots, bamboo grass, bamboo grass, apples, carrots, and "panda dumplings," and its feeding situation remains good.
We will continue to monitor the mother and child 24 hours a day. Physical examinations will also continue, but the timing is yet to be determined.
