A physical examination of Xiang Xiang, Giant Panda born on June 12, 2017, was conducted around 9:10 AM on November 5, 2018, when she was 511 days old. Her weight was 37.1 kg, an increase of 0.7 kg from 36.4 kg on October 25. Her body length was not measured.
The mother and cub (Shin Shin and Xiang Xiang) spend their days in the outdoor enclosure and their nights in indoor rooms 2 and 3.
Xiang Xiang is curious about all sorts of things around her, plays energetically, and is often seen playfully nuzzling her mother, Shin Shin. She also frequently uses the hammock in Indoor Room 2 to play and rest.
Xiang Xiang rests for about 13 to 15 hours a day, and spends the rest of the time being active or nursing, but her rhythm is not constant.
Up until now, it has often been seen chewing on the bamboo and dwarf bamboo that its mother is eating, and it eats sliced apples almost every day. Also, since around July 14th, it has started eating bamboo leaves, and recently it has been frequently seen eating bamboo stalks (the trunk-like parts of the bamboo).
The animals seem to like the new platform (which has been in use since September 29th) installed in the outdoor enclosure, and can often be seen resting on it or eating bamboo.
As announced on November 1st, starting on the 13th, she will begin preparations to live independently, separated from her mother, Shin Shin.
Therefore, we started training to get her used to formula milk on October 9th. At first, she wouldn't drink the formula milk, so we tried various methods, such as mixing in grated apple, and she eventually started to drink it willingly. Currently, she drinks all of the formula milk we give her, even if it doesn't contain apple.
Shin Shin continues to be cared for, including being nursed about 4-5 times a day. Shin Shin eats bamboo, bamboo grass, apples, carrots, panda dumplings, and pellets well.
*As a general rule, Xiang Xiang's physical examinations are conducted on days ending in "5". *Announcements will be made on the website twice a month, on the day following a park closure. The scheduled dates for October 2018 are the 10th (Wed) and 23rd (Tue), and for November, they are the 6th (Tue) and 20th (Wed).
