As announced on November 1, 2018, Ueno Zoo 's Giant Panda, Xiang Xiang, has begun preparations to live independently, separated from her mother, Shin Shin.

On the morning of November 13th, the day preparations began, Xiang Xiang was taken out to the outdoor enclosure by herself. At first, she was seen wandering around near the entrance to the enclosure, but she soon settled down and began eating bamboo and dwarf bamboo, and resting on her favorite platform.

Take started drinking formula on October 9th, and his food intake is gradually increasing. He rests for about 13-15 hours a day, and spends the rest of the time being active or drinking breast milk at night (his rhythm is not consistent). On November 20th (526 days old), his weight was 37.2 kg. This is an increase of 0.1 kg from 37.1 kg on November 5th (we may also measure his weight on days other than those ending in "5" for health monitoring purposes).

When Shin Shin is with Xiang Xiang, she continues to take care of her, including nursing her. Shin Shin eats bamboo, bamboo grass, apples, carrots, panda dumplings, and pellets.

　As announced on November 11th, preparations for Xiang Xiang's independence will proceed carefully, step by step. Preparations began on November 13th, and we entered Step 2 today, November 20th (Announcement).








*As a general rule, Xiang Xiang's physical examinations are conducted on days ending in "5".
*Announcements on the website will be made twice in December and once from January onwards, on the day following a park closure.
The scheduled dates for December 2018 are the 11th (Tue) and 26th (Wed), and for January 2018, it's the 8th (Tue).
