In conjunction with this event, which focuses on animals living in Japan, we will be introducing Ueno Zoo 's efforts to protect Rock Ptarmigan in several installments.
Part 1: What kind of bird is Rock Ptarmigan?
Rock Ptarmigan inhabits high mountains such as the Japanese Alps. Ueno Zoo has been working to save Rock Ptarmigan from extinction since 2008.
Rock Ptarmigan belongs to the pheasant family, which also includes Japanese Quail, chickens, quail, and turkeys. This group of birds is generally more adept at walking on the ground than flying.
The grouse subfamily of the Rock Ptarmigan family comprises 16 species distributed in cold regions of the Northern Hemisphere, including species such as the white-tailed Rock Ptarmigan, ruffed Rock Ptarmigan, and Rock Ptarmigan.
Of the 16 species, the one called "Rock Ptarmigan" is the "species" distributed from Northern Europe to Siberia, Alaska, and northern Canada. Rock Ptarmigan found in the high mountains of Japan is the "subspecies" that inhabits the southernmost part of this species and is also called the Japanese rock Rock Ptarmigan.
It is believed that Rock Ptarmigan, as a species, adapted to cold climates and expanded into temperate regions like Japan during the Ice Age when temperatures dropped, but after the Ice Age ended, they survived in small numbers on high mountaintops.
