The new Giant Panda enclosure, "Panda Forest," will open on September 8, 2020.

A new facility for Giant Panda and other animals that live in their natural habitat will be built in West Garden of Ueno Zoo. "Panda Forest" The new facility will open on September 8, 2020. Giant Panda "Ri Ri" and "Shin Shin," who will be moving to the new facility, will not be on public display from August 18 (Tuesday) until the new facility opens.

Features of the new facility

The exhibit recreates trees, rocks, and water features modeled after Sichuan Province in China, the homeland of Giant Panda. It also includes exhibits for Red Panda and Chinese pheasants, which inhabit the same region. The site covers approximately 6,800 square meters.

name

The area, including the new Giant Panda enclosure, was named" Panda Forest," the name that received the most votes in a survey conducted within the park in February 2020. The name has two meanings: to allow Giant Panda Giant Panda to live vibrantly in an environment that recreates their vast "forest" habitat, and to help many people "protect" these rare animals.

Exhibit animals

In addition to Giant Panda and pheasants, the zoo will also be showcasing Karin (female, 8 years old) and Luca (female, 4 years old), Red Panda that were taken in from Misaki Park in Osaka Prefecture, which closed on March 31st this year.

・Two silver Lady Amherst's Pheasant (one male, one female)
・Two Temminck's Tragopan (one male, one female)

*Please note that public viewing may be suspended depending on the weather, temperature, etc., in order to manage the animals' health.
 

Completion Ceremony

A ceremony to commemorate the completion of the new facility will be held at "Panda Forest" on Monday, September 7, 2020. Media representatives will be welcome to cover the ceremony and tour the facility afterward. For more details, please refer to the press information which will be announced at a later date.

 *Please note that the park will be closed on that day, so the general public will not be able to attend the completion ceremony.

Regarding the suspension of public viewing due to the relocation of Ri Ri and Shin Shin

Prior to the opening of the new facility, Ri Ri and Shin Shin will be gradually moved from their current panda enclosure in East Garden to "Panda Forest" to allow them to acclimate to the new facility. For this reason, public viewing will be suspended from August 18th to September 7th (the zoo is closed on Mondays, including September 7th).
In order to ensure that Xiang Xiang will be on public display during the summer holidays, she will continue to be exhibited at her current panda enclosure in East Garden.

   The public viewing of Ri Ri and Shin Shin will be suspended from August 18th (Tue) to September 7th (Mon), 2020.
