Asian Elephant "Ati"
(Photo taken on April 24, 2020)Ati was born in Thailand on December 14, 1996, and on October 11, 2002, on the occasion of the birth of Princess Aiko, she was donated from Surin Province, Thailand to the Japanese people as a token of friendship and arrived at Ueno Zoo along with a female named Uthai. After reaching sexual maturity, efforts were made to breed her with female elephants.
Utai is currently pregnant..
On July 29, 2020, a mycobacterial infection (suspected tuberculosis) was diagnosed. Although we had been taking care to manage the animals in a way that would not put stress on them, on the morning of August 23rd, the animal became unable to stand up.
Because prolonged lying down can compress an elephant's internal organs and potentially lead to death, caretakers and veterinarians took measures to position the elephant in a less stressful position, but it was confirmed dead on the morning of the 24th. The cause of death is currently under investigation.
With Ati's death, Ueno Zoo now has three female Asian Asian Elephant (Daya, Surya, and Uthai).
