Regarding the extension of the cooperation agreement for the implementation of Giant Panda conservation research.
Based on the "Cooperation Agreement between the China Wildlife Conservation Association and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government of Japan for the Implementation of Giant Panda Conservation Research" (Agreement Period: February 21, 2011 - February 20, 2021), the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the China Wildlife Conservation Association have promoted Giant Panda conservation through a Giant Panda breeding research project, contributing to the further development of wildlife conservation in China and fostering understanding of natural environment conservation and wildlife protection (Related Articles).

Yesterday (December 10, 2020), the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the China Wildlife Conservation Association signed an "Extension Agreement between the China Wildlife Conservation Association and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government of Japan on Cooperation in Giant Panda Conservation and Research" (Agreement Period: February 21, 2021 to February 20, 2026), extending the current agreement for five years. As a result, the male Giant Panda "Ri Ri" and the female giant panda "Shin Shin" will continue to be kept at Ueno Zoo after February 21, 2021.

Regarding the extension of the deadline for Xiang Xiang's return
The female Giant Panda "Xiang Xiang," born at Ueno Zoo on June 12, 2017, is owned by China under an agreement between the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the China Wildlife Conservation Association. She was scheduled to be returned by December 31, 2020 (see related article), but this deadline has now been extended to May 31, 2021. The specific return date and the end date for viewing her will be announced separately.​ ​The return deadline has now been extended to June 30, 2022 (see here for details).
