Ueno Ueno Zoo, which has been temporarily closed since December 26, 2020, remains quiet (please see this page for details on the temporary closure).

All three pandas, Ri Ri, Shin Shin, and Xiang Xiang, are in good health. They spend most of their time in the outdoor enclosure during the day when the weather is nice, and indoors on rainy days and at night. Their diet consists mainly of bamboo and dwarf bamboo such as Moso bamboo, Madake bamboo, and Sasa bamboo, along with panda dumplings, pellets, carrots, and apples as needed. They have also been given bamboo shoots since April 7th.

Xiang Xiang continues to live happily in Giant Panda enclosure in East Garden. While she exhibits the same behaviors as adult pandas, such as foraging and resting, she is occasionally seen moving around actively. Eurasian Moorhen training for Xiang Xiang, which began on February 4, 2019, is also continuing.

​As previously announced, the deadline for Xiang Xiang's return has been extended to December 31, 2021, taking into account the situation regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.

On April 5, 2021 (1,393 days old), the measurement showed a weight of 86.4 kg.

Ri Ri and Shin Shin are staying in the "Panda Forest" in West Garden. As previously announced, we confirmed two matings between the two on March 6th (please see this page for information on mating behavior and the end of estrus). We will inform you again when Shin Shin shows signs of pregnancy.

*As a general rule, Xiang Xiang's physical examination is conducted on days ending in "5" (it may also be conducted on other days).

*The "Giant Panda Update" will be posted on the website twice a month, around 3 PM on the day following a day the zoo is closed.
　In April 2021, the dates are the 13th (Tue) and 27th (Tue), and in May, they are the 11th (Tue) and 25th (Tue).
