Pallas' Cat 's cats at Ueno Zoo, "Dro" (male) and "Yus" (female), are both 15 years old.
The lifespan of Pallas' Cat is about 10 years in captivity, and much shorter in the wild, so these two cats are quite elderly. As a result, both are showing signs of aging, such as decreased muscle strength, reduced activity levels, and difficulty climbing to high places, as well as problems with molting.
Furthermore, a regular check-up revealed that the animal's kidneys were weakened. For these reasons, we have ended the exhibit and moved it to a controlled area for rearing.
In the controlled area, its appetite has increased and its health is stable. Based on this situation, we have decided not to return it to the exhibit and to keep it in a quiet and peaceful environment.
We will continue to strive to ensure that Draw and Yus, who have contributed to deepening our understanding of Pallas' Cat over many years, can continue to live peacefully.
