ジャイアントパンダの近況[121]
 └─2025/02/27
We would like to announce the following about the two Giant Panda Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei, who were born at Ueno Zoo on June 23, 2021.

Xiao Xiao's latest news

Xiaoxiao's health is good.

We primarily feed them bamboo such as Moso bamboo, Shino bamboo, and Madake bamboo, and supplement their diet with panda dumplings, carrots, and apples as needed. There are no particular abnormalities in their foraging or behavior, and they are in good condition.

Currently, we are conducting environmental enrichment (*1) irregularly using the scents of various foods and the feces of other Giant Panda. We will continue to monitor Xiao Xiao's reactions and explore ways to improve the environmental enrichment.

We are currently carrying out construction on outdoor enclosure C. After the construction is completed, we will conduct practice letting Xiao Xiao out into outdoor enclosure C on days when the park is closed, and once she has become accustomed to the environment, we plan to use this enclosure on days when the park is open as well.

Xiao Xiao has been undergoing Eurasian Moorhen training (*2) since July 16, 2023. Through repeated training, it will become possible to safely manage the health of pandas by touching them with minimal stress. Training was temporarily suspended when Ri Ri and Shin Shin went into quarantine, but it resumed on October 25 after their return. The ultrasound (echo) training conducted last month has progressed smoothly, and following the X-ray examination the month before last, she is now able to perform all the necessary movements. Currently, she is undergoing training to keep her mouth open.

*1 Environmental enrichment
Efforts to enable animals to live healthier lives, both physically and mentally, within limited living environments.

*2 Eurasian Moorhen training
Training animals to exhibit spontaneous behavior is aimed at ensuring their healthy living and safe working conditions for humans.

Lei Lei has been undergoing Eurasian Moorhen training since July 21, 2023. Like Xiao Xiao, her training was temporarily suspended when Li Li and Xin Xin began their quarantine, but it resumed on October 26.
