Updates on Sumatran Tiger cub and its chosen name.
The two Sumatran Tiger cubs born at Ueno Zoo on July 2, 2025, are growing well.
Immediately after birth, its steps were unsteady, but now they are steady, and it runs around the bedroom. Since August 31st, it has also been observed gnawing on meat. Its mother, "Minpi," is taking care of it by nursing and playing with it.
The nicknames for the two pups are as follows:
| sex | Nickname | Origin and Intent |
|---|
| Male | Bellani | The name comes from "Berani," which means "brave" in Indonesian. We named him with the hope that he would grow up to be as strong and brave as a tiger, which is known as a symbol of strength. |
| female | Resta | The name comes from "Lestari," which means "unchanging" in Indonesian. From an environmental conservation perspective, this word evokes "sustainability and harmony with nature." As a tiger born in a zoo, we named it with the hope that it will become a part of creating a better future for both tigers and humans. |
