We would like to inform you of the following regarding Giant Panda "Shin Shin" and her two cubs "Xiao Xiao" and "Lei Lei," and "Li Li" and "Xiang Xiang," who were born on June 23, 2021.

Recent updates on Ri Ri and Xiang Xiang

Both Ri Ri and Xiang Xiang are in good health.

Their diet mainly consists of bamboo and dwarf bamboo species such as Moso bamboo, Shino bamboo, and Madake bamboo, along with panda dumplings, pellets (solid feed), carrots, and apples as needed. On some days, they are given Moso bamboo shoots, which they eat readily.

As of May 15, 2022, Ri Ri's weight was 143.6 kg and Xiang Xiang's weight was 101.6 kg.

Shinshin's current situation

There are no health problems with Shinshin.

We primarily feed her bamboo and dwarf bamboo species such as Moso bamboo, Shino bamboo, and Madake bamboo, and she also readily eats panda dumplings, carrots, and apples as supplements. The amount of food we give her is adjusted as needed based on her eating habits, weight changes, and nursing of her cub. We sometimes give her Moso bamboo shoots, which she eats well.

As of May 15, 2022, Shinshin's weight was measured at 133.0 kg.

At night, Shinshin is kept with Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei, and is allowed to freely move between the indoor exhibit and the sleeping area. During the day, she is allowed to freely move between the exercise area and the indoor exhibit, so that mother and cubs can use the exercise area together. Even when the twins are nearby, she often prioritizes foraging, but she keeps a close eye on her children.

Updates on Xiaoxiao and Leilei

Both puppies are in good health. Although there may be some difference in their weight, both are gaining weight steadily.

At night, as before, they play with Shinshin, frolic together, and have been seen nibbling on bamboo and bamboo shoots. On May 13th, Xiao Xiao was given a small piece of apple, and on May 10th, Lei Lei was given a small piece of apple to see if they would eat it. They were seen holding the piece with their front paws and nibbling on it little by little. Judging from their droppings, they have not eaten any other solid food besides these times. Xiang Xiang, who was born in 2017, also ate an apple for the first time in May 2018.

As before, Xiaoxiao spends long periods of time on the Japanese evergreen oak and hackberry trees. Recently, Leilei has not only been spending time on the hackberry and artificial trees, but has also been spending more time indoors, entering the indoor exhibit room when it is opened.

The timing varies from day to day, but the two cubs are typically nursed two to three times a day. In addition to breast milk, they are also continuously given formula.

We've placed a mark on Xiao Xiao's back to allow us to review video footage of her nighttime activities and to clearly identify her in surveillance camera footage. Neither mother nor offspring seem to mind the mark.
