Animals whose exhibits will be closedGiant Panda "Xiang Xiang" (female)

Exhibition closure period
July 5, 2022 (Tuesday) ~ July 19th (Tuesday) July 31st (Sunday)*The park will be closed on August 1st (Monday).
Details and reasons for the construction work
Content: Installation of additional air conditioning equipment inside East Garden panda enclosure.Reason: The air conditioning equipment currently used in the panda enclosure in East Garden is aging, and there is a possibility that the cooling function will deteriorate or that the air conditioning will become unusable in the event of a malfunction. Therefore, additional air conditioning equipment will be installed to reinforce the cooling function.
Reasons for suspending the exhibition
If construction were to be carried out while Xiang Xiang is being cared for, it is anticipated that noise and other factors may have a negative impact on her. Therefore, we have decided to temporarily move Xiang Xiang to the "Panda Forest" (a non-public area) in West Garden and proceed with the construction.*There will be no changes to the exhibits of the other Giant Panda besides Xiang Xiang, namely Shin Shin, Xiao Xiao, Lei Lei, and Ri Ri, as a result of this construction work.
In addition,
Giant Panda mother and cubs (Shin Shin, Xiao Xiao, and Lei Lei) can only be viewed by visitors who have won a lottery.

Added on July 5, 2022: Xiang Xiang has been moved.
On Monday, July 4th, Xiang Xiang was moved to the "Panda Forest "West Garden. To minimize stress on Xiang Xiang, the move was carried out in the early morning when temperatures were low, and the operation was completed in a short amount of time.
After moving, Xiang Xiang appeared restless in the unfamiliar facility, but her health remains unchanged.
You won't be able to see Xiang Xiang for a while, but we will be regularly posting updates on her condition on
Ueno Zoo official Twitter account.

July 19, 2022 Update: The period of closure for Xiang Xiang's exhibit will be extended.
Xiang Xiang returned to East Garden panda enclosure on July 11th. Careful care has been taken in her care in preparation for the reopening of the exhibit on July 20th, but due to the move between animal enclosures and the unfamiliar life in West Garden Giant Panda enclosure, it is taking time for her to return to her pre-move routine.
Although its food intake is gradually increasing, it has not yet returned to the amount it was eating before the relocation. Furthermore, it sometimes stops eating in response to noises, indicating that it has not fully recovered its composure. Therefore, we have determined that exhibiting it would be difficult and have decided to postpone the reopening of the exhibit.
We apologize for any inconvenience and worry this may cause, but we ask for your understanding as we continue to manage Xiang Xiang's health for a while longer.
We will inform you of the reopening date of the exhibition as soon as it is decided.

Added on August 1, 2022: Xiang Xiang's exhibit will reopen on August 2nd.
Xiang Xiang returned to East Garden panda enclosure on July 11th, but because she did not appear to have fully settled down, we postponed the reopening of her exhibit. Recently, she has largely returned to her pre-move routine, so we will reopen Xiang Xiang's exhibit on August 2nd.
Xiang Xiang is currently on a summer routine and is resting more. As a result, her feeding time has decreased, but there are no problems with her food intake or health. We will continue to carefully observe her behavior and condition even after the exhibition reopens.
Please note that due to the health management of the animals, exhibition hours may be shortened or exhibitions may be canceled on short notice. Thank you for your understanding.
