We would like to inform you of the following regarding Giant Panda "Shin Shin" and her two cubs "Xiao Xiao" and "Lei Lei," and "Li Li" and "Xiang Xiang," who were born on June 23, 2021.

Lili's current situation

Li Li's health is good.

Their diet mainly consists of bamboo and dwarf bamboo species such as Moso bamboo, Shino bamboo, and Madake bamboo, along with panda dumplings, carrots, and apples, which are given as needed.

On days when daytime temperatures are high, we have kept them indoors in an air-conditioned environment. However, since September 21st, we have been allowing them to spend time in the outdoor exercise area on sunny days when the temperature drops. Initially, they were seen walking around the exercise area and marking their territory with their scent, but gradually they began to forage for bamboo, and after a few days, they were also seen resting.

As of September 25, 2022, Leelee's weight was measured at 139.4 kg.

Xiang Xiang's current status

Their diet mainly consists of bamboo and dwarf bamboo species such as Moso bamboo, Shino bamboo, and Madake bamboo, along with panda dumplings, pellets (solid feed), carrots, and apples, which are given as needed.

On days when daytime temperatures were high, we kept them indoors in an air-conditioned environment. However, since September 22nd, we have allowed them to spend time in the outdoor exercise area on days when the temperature has dropped. It had been a while since they were outdoors, but after a few days, they were seen resting outdoors.

As of September 26, 2022, Xiang Xiang's weight was measured at 95.4 kg.

Shinshin's current situation

There are no health problems with Shinshin.

Her diet mainly consists of bamboo and dwarf bamboo species such as Moso bamboo, Shino bamboo, and Madake bamboo, and she also readily eats panda dumplings, carrots, and apples as supplements. The amount of food given is adjusted as needed according to Shin Shin's eating habits, weight changes, and nursing of her cubs.

As of September 25, 2022, Shinshin's weight was measured at 128.1 kg.

At night, Shinshin is kept with Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei, and is allowed to freely move between the indoor exhibit and sleeping area. On days when the daytime temperature is high, she has been kept indoors in an air-conditioned environment, but since September 21st, she has been allowed to spend time in the outdoor exercise area on days when the temperature drops. She ate bamboo as soon as she went outside, but it was only for a short time before she started walking around the exercise area, so she was brought back inside. We plan to gradually increase the amount of time Shinshin spends outdoors while monitoring her condition. She continues to be seen playing with Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei, showing affection and responding to their nursing.

Updates on Xiaoxiao and Leilei

Both puppies are in good health. Although there may be some difference in their weight, both are gaining weight steadily.

They are now often seen gnawing on bamboo at night, and otherwise, they are seen playing with Shinshin and the two of them playing together, just as before.

Up until now, they had been kept indoors in an air-conditioned environment, but since September 21st, they have been allowed to spend time in the outdoor exercise area on days when the temperature drops. Initially, Lei Lei stayed near the door and seemed to want to go back inside, but as soon as Shin Shin came out, she went right up to her. As soon as Xiao Xiao went outside, she climbed a tree and didn't come down for a while. After that, both of them were seen climbing trees and playing together as before, but when Shin Shin returned indoors, they followed her back inside.

To help them get used to eating solid food, we have been giving them about 10g of apple per day since June 25th, and both of them are now able to eat it without much difficulty. Around July 27th, we started noticing bamboo fragments in Lei Lei's droppings, which led us to believe she had started eating bamboo. Although small, her droppings are shaped very similarly to the rugby balls that adults excrete. Some droppings mainly consist of bamboo leaves, while others mainly contain branches and the hard parts of the culms. On September 24th, we confirmed that Xiaoxiao had excreted droppings that were mainly bamboo leaves, which led us to believe she had started eating bamboo.

Additionally, on September 24th, we confirmed that one of Xiaoxiao's four canine teeth (baby teeth), specifically the lower left one, had fallen out. We have not yet been able to check the condition of the remaining canine teeth or Leilei's canine teeth.

The timing and frequency vary from day to day, but the two cubs are typically breastfed two to three times a day. In addition to breast milk, they are also continuously given formula.

We've placed a mark on Xiao Xiao's back to allow us to review video footage of her nighttime activities and to clearly identify her in surveillance camera footage. Neither mother nor offspring seem to mind the mark.

We will continue to carefully monitor Shinshin and the child's health and behavior. We will also conduct physical examinations and measurements of the child as needed, but the timing of these will be irregular.
