140th Anniversary Project ZooNet Series "Ueno Zoo 's Last 10 Years - Environmental Initiatives at the Gift Shop and Food Shop" Sales Staff
└─ 2022/11/15
Ueno Zoo has two gift shops and four food shops operated by Tokyo Zoological Park Society. They also offer mail-order sales of original merchandise from all Tokyo Metropolitan Zoos.

Because the zoo attracts visitors of all ages, our shops prioritize safety and security, while also developing unique zoo-themed products and menu items to create lasting and memorable experiences for our customers.

Over the past decade, we have been promoting initiatives that contribute to the conservation of the habitats of animals through the products we sell. One such initiative is the active development of panda donation products. A portion of the sales from these panda donation products is donated to Giant Panda Conservation Support Fund.

In 2017, to commemorate Xiang Xiang's birth, we released the "Real Size" series of plush toys, which accurately reproduced Xiang Xiang's actual length and weight. The toys received a great response because they allowed people to understand her growth process and experience her true weight. Many people likely learned the concept of donation through this product. Currently, we are selling the Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei series.

Restaurants have launched dessert menus that come with souvenir cups featuring original designs as donation items. Starting with designs of Giant Panda Shin Shin and Xiang Xiang, the designs have evolved into products commemorating Xiang Xiang's birthday, and have even been carried on to include Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei.

Another initiative is addressing environmental impact, starting with reducing plastic use. Beginning with switching from plastic gift bags to paper ones, we have since expanded our offerings to include postcards and notebooks made from FSC-certified paper, and charms made from thinned wood.

Restaurants are also moving towards reducing plastic use. They've switched to paper straws, drink cups, and beer cups. They're also incorporating biomass materials for plastic spoons and forks.

In addition, we are also taking on the challenge of promoting local production and consumption to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. We will continue our efforts to be environmentally conscious, starting with what we can do.
