We would like to inform you of the following regarding Giant Panda "Shin Shin" and her two cubs "Xiao Xiao" and "Lei Lei," and "Li Li" and "Xiang Xiang," who were born on June 23, 2021.

Lili's current situation

Li Li's health is good.

Their diet mainly consists of bamboo such as Moso bamboo, Shino bamboo, and Madake bamboo, along with panda dumplings, carrots, and apples, which are given as needed.

We adjust the enclosure locations according to the animals' condition and the weather, but as the weather has become more comfortable for pandas, we are letting them out outdoors more often. Also, as in previous years, their rest time has decreased and their bamboo consumption has increased. During the day, we are continuing to observe behaviors commonly seen during the breeding season, such as urinating while standing on their heads and marking territory.

As of January 15, 2023, Leelee's weight was measured at 133.1 kg.

Xiang Xiang's current status

Xiang Xiang is in good health.

Their diet mainly consists of bamboo such as Moso bamboo, Shino bamboo, and Madake bamboo, along with panda dumplings, pellets (solid feed), carrots, and apples, which are given as needed.

We adjust the enclosure location according to the animals' condition and the weather, but as the weather has become more comfortable for pandas, we are letting them out outdoors more often. Also, as in previous years, their rest time has decreased, and their bamboo consumption has increased.

As of January 15, 2023, Xiang Xiang's weight was measured at 95.4 kg.

Shinshin's current situation

Shinshin's health is good.

We primarily feed her bamboo such as Moso bamboo, Shino bamboo, and Madake bamboo, and she also readily eats panda dumplings, carrots, and apples as supplements. The amount of food we give her is adjusted as needed based on her eating habits, weight changes, and nursing of her cub.

As of January 15, 2023, Shinshin's weight was measured at 122.5 kg.

At night, Shin Shin is allowed to freely move between the indoor exhibit and her sleeping area along with Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei. Similar to Ri Li and Xiang Xiang, Shin Shin has also shown a decrease in rest time and an increase in the amount of bamboo she eats. She continues to be seen playing with Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei, and responding to their nursing.

Updates on Xiaoxiao and Leilei

Both puppies are in good health. Although there may be some difference in their weight, both are gaining weight steadily.

They are now often seen gnawing on bamboo, and otherwise, they continue to be seen playing with Shin Shin and frolicking together, just as before. Their enclosure is changed according to the animals' condition and the weather, but as the weather has become more comfortable for pandas, they are being let outside more often.

Both Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei have started eating bamboo, and are now defecating in a shape very similar to a rugby ball, like the droppings adults produce. The amount of droppings is steadily increasing, and on some days, the combined daily output of the two dogs exceeds 7 kg. However, it has become difficult to distinguish whose droppings are whose, so since January 9th, we have been weighing the combined droppings of all three dogs.

The timing and frequency vary from day to day, but the two cubs are typically breastfed two to three times a day. In addition to breast milk, they are also continuously given formula.

We've placed a mark on Xiao Xiao's back to allow us to review video footage of her nighttime activities and to clearly identify her in surveillance camera footage. Neither mother nor offspring seem to mind the mark.

Message from Ueno Zoo

We will continue to carefully monitor Shinshin and the child's health and behavior. We will also conduct physical examinations and measurements of the child as needed, but the timing of these will be irregular.

Also, as previously announced, the date for Xiang Xiang's return to China has been set for February 21st.
