The "Bird House" at Ueno Zoo had been closed to prevent the spread of avian influenza, but has reopened for display from Friday, March 28, 2025, following the expected lifting of the designation of the area as a priority zone for wild bird monitoring due to outbreaks of avian influenza in neighboring prefectures.
At Bird House, the relocation of birds has begun in preparation for its renovation. This facility was planned as part of the 100th anniversary celebration of Ueno Zoo opening and was completed in 1984. The building area is 642.71 square meters, with a non-public management area located on the third floor. It has 10 indoor exhibition rooms and 2 outdoor exhibition areas, and some of the indoor exhibition rooms have an open structure that spans the first and second floors, allowing visitors to observe both ground-dwelling birds and tree-dwelling birds up close.

Natural light enters the facility, and each exhibition room recreates diverse habitats tailored to the ecology of the exhibited animals, including plants and water features. When it first opened, it was a groundbreaking pioneer in ecological exhibits.
This facility has now been open for 40 years, and signs of aging are becoming noticeable. Aiming to create a better exhibition and breeding environment, we plan to begin preparations for redevelopment in fiscal year 2025. In conjunction with this, we have been gradually moving the birds within the facility since last year.
Therefore, the number of species on display in the facility is currently limited, and we ask for your understanding.
