The latest news on Giant Panda [97], the latest news on Shin Shin and her offspring [61]
└─ 2023/02/14
We would like to inform you of the following regarding Giant Panda "Shin Shin" and her two cubs "Xiao Xiao" and "Lei Lei," and "Li Li" and "Xiang Xiang," who were born on June 23, 2021.

Lili's current situation

Li Li's health is good.

Their diet mainly consists of bamboo such as Moso bamboo, Shino bamboo, and Madake bamboo, along with panda dumplings, carrots, and apples, which are given as needed.

We change the enclosure locations according to the animals' condition and the weather, but since it's a pleasant season for pandas, we're letting them out outdoors more often. Due to renovation work at "Panda Forest," the enclosure location has been changed since January 30th. Immediately after switching rooms with the mother and cub, there was an increase in behaviors commonly seen during the estrus period, such as urinating while standing on their heads and marking territory, but they have now calmed down.

As of February 5, 2023, Leelee's weight was measured at 130.9 kg.

Xiang Xiang's current status

Xiang Xiang is in good health.

Their diet mainly consists of bamboo such as Moso bamboo, Shino bamboo, and Madake bamboo, along with panda dumplings, pellets (solid feed), carrots, and apples, which are given as needed.

Since January 21st, Xiang Xiang has been undergoing animal quarantine in preparation for transport to China and is being kept indoors. During training on January 31st to help her get used to the transport crate, we noticed that Xiang Xiang's genitals were red and swollen, and this has continued since then. We have also observed behavioral changes such as her pacing around indoors for long periods of time day and night, and a significant decrease in her food intake. Blood tests revealed a significant increase in hormone levels. Considering all of these factors, we have determined that she is in estrus. Currently, her behavior is gradually calming down, and we are still checking whether her estrus has subsided, but we do not believe it will affect her transport to China.

As of February 5, 2023, Xiang Xiang's weight was measured at 94.4 kg.

Shinshin's current situation

Shinshin is in good health.

We primarily feed her bamboo such as Moso bamboo, Shino bamboo, and Madake bamboo, and she also readily eats panda dumplings, carrots, and apples as supplements. The amount of food we give her is adjusted as needed based on her eating habits, weight changes, and nursing of her cub.

Due to renovation work at "Panda Forest," the management location has been changed since January 30th, and the pandas are currently being cared for indoors. Even after switching rooms with Ri Ri, they continue to take care of their cubs as usual.

At night, Shinshin is allowed to freely move between the indoor exhibit and her sleeping area along with Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei. She continues to be seen playing with Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei, paying attention to them, and responding to their nursing.

As of February 5, 2023, Shinshin's weight was measured at 119.3 kg.

Updates on Xiaoxiao and Leilei

Both puppies are in good health. Although there may be some difference in their weight, both are gaining weight steadily.

They are now frequently seen gnawing on bamboo, and otherwise, they are seen playing with Shinshin and the two of them playing together, just as before.

Due to renovation work at the "Panda Forest," the pandas' location has been changed since January 30th, and they are currently being kept indoors. Since the change of room, Xiao Xiao has been observed following Shin Shin around, and Lei Lei has become somewhat sensitive to noise and is often seen climbing the artificial trees.

The timing and frequency vary from day to day, but the two cubs are typically breastfed 1 to 4 times a day. In addition to breast milk, they are also continuously given formula.

We've placed a mark on Xiao Xiao's back to allow us to review video footage of her nighttime activities and to clearly identify her in surveillance camera footage. Neither mother nor offspring seem to mind the mark.
