background

Ueno Zoo is working to breed Pygmy Hippopotamus through cooperation with other zoos. On March 20, 2023, they received a male hippo named "Motomoto" from NIFREL in Suita City, Osaka Prefecture, through a breeding loan (a contract to lend animals for breeding purposes).

In early June 2025, the two animals were placed together for breeding purposes, and multiple matings were observed. Subsequent ultrasound examinations confirmed the presence of what appeared to be a fetus. Preparations for the birth were underway, and it was confirmed that the fetus was born safely at 0:38 on December 25th.

Current situation

Nursing behavior was observed around 2:00 AM on Thursday, December 25th. The mother is calm, and both mother and child are doing well.
