The day before yesterday, on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, Sumatran Tiger named "Mimpi" gave birth to two cubs at Ueno Zoo. The sexes of the cubs are still unknown.

About my parents

Her mother, Mimpi, was born on August 4, 2014, at Yokohama Zoological Gardens Zoorasia, and came to our zoo from Yokohama Municipal Nogeyama Zoo on November 24, 2020. She is currently 10 years old.

The father is 12-year-old "Bran." Bran was born on May 21, 2013, at Yagiyama Zoological Park in Sendai City, and came to the park on December 3, 2018, from Misaki Park in Osaka Prefecture (which closed in March 2020).

Ueno Zoo is working with other zoos to promote the breeding of Sumatran Tiger. Both Mimpi and Bran were taken in by Ueno Zoo under a breeding loan agreement for the purpose of breeding.

In late March of this year (2025), the two animals were placed together for breeding purposes, and mating was observed multiple times. Then, on July 2nd, from just after 6:00 a.m., births took place over about an hour, and the birth of two cubs was confirmed.

Mimpi gave birth to two cubs on April 28, 2023 (a female named "Asa" and another stillborn), and then gave birth to three more cubs on December 4, 2023 (two males named "Alona" and "Abadi," and a female named "Makumuru").

Current situation

Both mother and babies are doing well. Mimpi is calm and in a nursing position, and the babies are latching on tightly. Please note that for the time being, the mother and babies will be kept indoors and will not be on public display. We appreciate your understanding. We will announce the public viewing date as soon as it is decided.

Number of captive individuals (as of July 4, 2025)

Including the cub born this time, the number of Sumatran Tiger being kept at Ueno Zoo has reached seven (1 male, 4 females, and 2 of unknown descent).

As of December 31, 2024, there are 19 animals (8 males and 11 females) in 7 facilities in Japan.
